RESUMO

O biofilme dentário é o principal fator etiológico no desenvolvimento das doenças periodontais, portanto seu controle eficiente reduz e/ou elimina a inflamação, proporcionando o retorno à normalidade dos tecidos periodontais. O controle mecânico do biofilme em pacientes que fazem o uso de aparelhos ortodônticos fixos pode ser dificultado pela presença de superfícies retentoras. Desta forma, o controle químico atuando como coadjuvante ao controle mecânico é relevante na manutenção e recuperação da saúde periodontal. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a importância do controle químico do biofilme dentário em pacientes submetidos à terapia ortodôntica fixa, baseado em relatos da literatura.

Abstract

Dental plaque is the major etiologic agent of the onset and establishment of periodontitis, thus its adequate control diminishes/eliminates tissue inflammation promoting the normality to the periodontal structure. Orthodontic patients experience difficulties in proceeding plaque control, whereas the presence of retentive apparatuses on teeth surfaces. In such case the chemical plaque control as coadjuvant to the mechanical management, plays an important role in the maintenance of health state and in the periodontal healing process.
