RESUMO

Introdução - As placas interoclusais são dispositivos intraorais, removíveis, confeccionados geralmente em resina acrílica, que recobrem, parcial ou totalmente, as superfícies incisais e oclusais dos dentes, alterando a oclusão do paciente, criando assim contatos oclusais mais adequados e conseqüentemente um relacionamento maxilo-mandibular mais favorável. São utilizadas para promover uma posição articular mais estável e funcional, reorganizando a atividade neuromuscular que, por sua vez, reduz a atividade muscular anormal, diminuindo assim, a sintomatologia muscular relacionada à Disfunção Temporomandibular (DTM). A placa interoclusal também atua como dispositivo diagnóstico, ou seja, como um método reversível para testar as respostas musculares e articulares às alterações no posicionamento horizontal e vertical da mandíbula, antes da estabilização permanente da oclusão com o ajuste oclusal, prótese ou ortodontia. O objetivo deste trabalho é relacionar a utilização das placas interoclusais, tanto como uma modalidade terapêutica, como um mecanismo útil no estabelecimento do diagnóstico das Disfunções Temporomandibulares, na tentativa de esclarecer o seu papel.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Interocclusal splints are intraoral removable devices, confectioned generally in acrylic resin, which recover the incisal and occlusal surfaces of teeth partially or totally, modifying the occlusion of the patient, thus creating more adequate occlusal contacts and a consequent more favorable maxilo-mandibular relationship. They are used to promote an articulate position more steady and functional, reorganizing the neuromuscular activity that reduces the abnormal muscular activity, then decreasing the related muscular symptoms to Temporomandibular Dysfunction (DTM). The interocclusal splint also acts as a diagnostic device and reversible method testing the muscular and articulate answers to the alterations in the horizontal and vertical positioning of the jaw before the permanent stabilization of the occlusion with the occlusal adjustment, prostheses or orthodontic. The objective of this work is to relate the use of the interocclusal splints, as much as a therapeutical modality, as a useful mechanism in the establishment of the diagnosis of the Temporomandibular Dysfunctions, in the attempt to clarify its role in the DTMs.
